The natural phenomenon of volcanic eruptions is a geological event that has significant impacts in various parts of the world. When a volcano erupts, magma, gas, and other volcanic materials are forced out of the earth, creating a phenomenon that is both awe-inspiring and frightening. In Indonesia, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, volcanic eruptions are common. One example is the eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 which caused nearly 400,000 people to flee. The eruption not only destroyed infrastructure, but also affected public health due to ashfall and air pollution. Shifting to Iceland, the eruption of Mount Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 had a global impact by shutting down most of Europe’s air traffic for almost two months. Volcanic ashfall causes disruption to flights, harms the tourism industry and adds to economic losses worldwide. This phenomenon shows how volcanic eruptions can have an impact not only locally but also at the international level. In the United States, Mount St. St. Helens erupted in 1980 changing the surrounding landscape and causing major damage. These eruptions resulted in economic losses reaching billions of dollars, in addition to long-lasting ecological impacts. The process of restoring the ecosystem in the area is still ongoing today, with research on the long-term impacts of volcanic eruptions continuing. Meanwhile in the Philippines, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 was one of the largest eruptions of the 20th century. The eruption not only impacted local communities, but also produced stratospheric aerosols that changed global weather, thereby lowering the earth’s temperature and having a significant cooling effect for several years. These incidents show that the impacts of volcanic eruptions vary from infrastructure damage, health problems, to short-term climate change. Areas adjacent to volcanoes are at high risk, but the impacts sometimes spread far beyond geographic boundaries, creating challenges for governments and the world community in dealing with these natural disasters. Apart from negative impacts, volcanic eruptions also offer benefits to agriculture. Volcanic ash can enrich the soil, increasing plant fertility. For example, in the area around Mount Merapi, several years after the eruption, the increase in agricultural yields due to soil fertility was seen to be significant. However, challenges remain in terms of predicting the exact eruption or the complexity of the resulting long-term impacts. Due to all these impacts, it is important for countries along the path of volcanic generation to have effective early warning systems and evacuation plans. Further research and understanding of volcanic behavior can help reduce the risks posed by this natural phenomenon and protect communities living around volcanic areas.
